Breeding is how you make new pets. Two pets you own produce an egg, and the pet that hatches from it inherits traits from its parents, including species, Skin and Aura.

Takes in Two breedable pets, BC, optional Cursed Charm and Mutagenic Sludge
Produces Eggs, then new pets with a Generation, and sometimes a Skin or Aura
Affected by Zootechny (BC cost), Virility (cooldown), Menager (egg and pet space)

Eggs

An egg becomes a pet when you hatch it. You need free pet space to hatch (see Stables and pet space), and eggs themselves take egg space, which Menager raises. You can inspect an egg's parents before hatching. On the Main profile eggs can be sent to other players, but restricted profile modes block player transfers (see Profile Modes).

Eggs can come from three places:

Breeding two pets

Pick two of your pets to breed. Each parent must be:

  • At least level 18.
  • Off its breeding cooldown.
  • A breedable species. Supporter species and the current seasonal species cannot breed.

You can breed several times in one go, and you can choose to hatch the eggs straight away. A batch stops when you run out of BC, space, matching breeding items, or when a parent goes on cooldown.

Costs and cooldowns

  • BC cost: the first breed each day costs 200,000 BC, and the cost doubles for every pet you breed after that on the same day. The count resets daily. Zootechny discounts it.
  • Cooldown: after a pet is bred, it must wait before breeding again. The wait roughly doubles each time that same pet has been bred. Virility takes time off the wait.

Check the breeding preview for the exact numbers for your parents.

Inheritance

When an egg hatches, its pet gets:

  • Species: an equal chance of either parent's species.
  • Generation: one above the higher parent (see below).
  • Skin: rolled separately, and often none (see Skins).
  • Aura: rolled separately, and often none (see Auras).

Skins and Auras are cosmetic. They do not make an ordinary pet faster. Species decides which Adventure the pet prefers.

Skins

A Skin gives a pet a colouring not seen in the rest of its species. Each Skin has a base chance of appearing on the hatched pet. A pet can have only one Skin.

Skin Base chance
Alpha 10.00%
Beta 1.00%
Gamma 0.50%
Delta 0.40%
Epsilon 0.30%
Zeta 0.20%
Eta 0.10%

Each parent that has a given Skin doubles the chance of that Skin. Each parent holding Missing game reference: skinBoostItem when you breed triples all the Skin chances. Charms are used up. There are also special Skins that cannot be bred, such as the Burnt Skin from the Pyre.

Auras

An Aura is a glow around the pet. The base Auras are Missing game reference: auraTypes, and they are all equally rare.

  • The base chance of an Aura on the hatched pet is 5%.
  • Each parent that has an Aura doubles that chance.
  • Each parent holding Missing game reference: auraBoostItem when you breed triples it. Sludge is used up.
  • When an Aura appears and a parent has one, there is a high chance the pet gets that parent's Aura. Otherwise it gets a random base Aura.

The Pyre's Smoldering and Damned Auras are never inherited, and a parent with one counts as having no Aura.

Breeding items

Pets can hold Cursed Charm (for Skins) and Mutagenic Sludge (for Auras) while being bred. Give the item to the pet before you breed (see Held items). For batches, the held item is used on the first breed, and each further breed takes a new one from your inventory. Both items have other uses, so plan your supply before starting a long collection project.

Generation and lineage

A pet's Generation says how far it descends from the original pets. When a pet hatches, its Generation is the higher parent's Generation plus one. A lower Generation is therefore rarer, and higher Generations are more common. Generation is lineage only and has nothing to do with strength or Tier.

Every pet's parents can be traced back to its Generation I ancestors. Generation I pets came from the early prototype pet system, so they are extremely rare and cannot be made by normal breeding. Their rarity makes them wanted by collectors.

Wild eggs

When you perform a Loot Action, each one has a small chance to find a wild egg. Its parents are wild pets (pets that players released) that match the action: Fish Loot Actions give Fish species, and so on. It needs a free egg slot, so keep a couple free. New players can also claim a first egg to start their fleet. Parents are picked from well-bred wild pets when possible, so wild eggs tend to hatch pets of a fairly high Generation.

Genesis Egg

A Genesis Egg is a Special that creates a new Generation I pet. Unless the Special says otherwise, the species is random, and its Skin chances are five times higher than normal. It ignores your pet storage limit. Some Genesis Eggs are for a specific species, so read the Special before using it.

How Breeding connects to other features

  • Parents come from your fleet of Pets. Everything you hatch is recorded in the Menagerie.
  • Specials such as the Auralyzer and Skinulator can change a pet's Aura or Skin.
  • The Pyre can reroll a pet's Skin, Aura or species, but at the risk of losing the pet.
  • Prestige perks reduce costs and cooldowns.
